What's New

September 2006

We are in the process of slit seeding fairways.  Over the years, we are working to incorporate new grass varieties into our fairways.  These new grasses have many improved characteristics like greater drought heartiness, improved disease resistance and better color.

August 2006

It has finally stopped raining.  Fairways are dry.  You are now able to get some roll.  You will be hitting a different club into the green than you used this spring and early summer.

May 2006

Heather is back!!!!!

March 2006

The golf course looks beautiful.
Leaves on the trees are the only things missing.

Course Maintenance progress, Spring 2006.
    Greens have all been mowed.
    Fairways are all mowed.
Sticks are being picked up as time allows.
    Tees have been mowed.

Winter 2005 - 2006

Our snow mold control has been applied.  The course is closed.  It is time once again to become reacquainted with family and friends.  Once January begins, we will be working hard to get all of our equipment back into shape to face another summer.

I spent 3 days in Columbus, OH at the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation Convention and Trade Show.  This is an opportunity that I take to get up to date on all of the current research taking place for the turfgrass industry.  It is also a great networking opportunity.

September 2005

All of our aerification has been completed for the year.  Our irrigation lines have been blown out.  It is that time of the year.

Eleven tees have been aerified and reseeded.  The seed has germinated nicely due to the ideal weather we have had so far this fall.  We will attempt to aerify and reseed  6 additional tees as soon as the conditions are favorable.

We miss Heather!

We have relocated the creek that runs behind 14 green.  The grass is filling in nicely on the area between the green and the creek.

All of our greens were aerified the week of September 5.  They are all healed in nicely.

We are attempting to relocate the creek that runs behind 14 green.  We plan on pushing the creek up against the hill side.  This will give us more landing area near the green.  We will also reinforce one edge of the creek with the concrete slabs that are laying down in the valley.  This will help prevent the creek from eroding away 14 green.

On Monday August 22,  we aerified greens # 3 and 12.  These 2 greens have been displaying signs of stress due to the high heat, extreme humidity and occasionally high rain fall.  This aerification should help the greens recover.  See my aerification discussion on this web page.

The new and improved periscope has been reinstalled on # 8 tee.  The periscope has been lowered and lengthened.

On Wednesday, May 18, 2005, we topdressed green # 12.  It was damaged over the winter by snow mold.  The green now plays very smooth.

The clubhouse is now a Wi-Fi access point!  This is still in the beta stage.

The following is a list of past projects at Skyland.

The new green on # 11 is now open for play!

bulletThe original green on # 11 was removed on the week of July 10th, 2000
bulletPlay was diverted to a  temporary green, 75 yards short of the original green.
bulletA new, somewhat larger green was built in place of the original green.
bulletThe new green was seeded in the fall of 2000.
bulletThe new green was opened for play on June 25th, 2001.
bulletThere was fan fare and ceremony with the first foursome to play the new hole.
bulletThe new green on is holding up well given the punishing weather conditions this year.

We have dammed the creek on hole 17

bulletThe creek on # 17 - # 11 is spring fed.  Water continually flows through this creek.  The problem is, water is not held at an aesthetically pleasing level.  We have installed a concrete dam across the creek.  It will hold water in the creek until it attains a certain water level.  Once enough water is held back, water will begin to flow over the spillway of the dam.  We plan on installing 2 more "step dams" across the creek to retain water in # 11 creek.  We plan on installing these dams in the near future.  This will give us some experience with the first dam.  We need to be sure that we designed the dam correctly.
